Fascinating Floss

Fascinating FlossHave you ever really thought about dental floss? Sure, we know that flossing is one of the best things that you can do for your oral health, and for your health in general. Flossing between your teeth removes plaque and food particles that get built up and stuck under the gum line. It keeps your teeth clean, your breath fresh, and regular flossing helps prevent periodontal disease, which carries with it a whole load of problems. Not only can periodontal disease cause your gums to bleed and become sore and swollen, but it can also lead to infection. Infected gums can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and several other health problems that anyone would want to avoid if possible.

When it comes to the different types of floss on the market, the choices might be overwhelming. Truthfully, as long as you’re flossing, it might not matter what type of floss you use just as long as you are doing a thorough job and doing it at least once a day. But if floss choice concerns you, here are some things to know.

  • Unwaxed. Thin floss made from nylon yarn that fits well between teeth that are close together. Has a tendency to break or fray.
  • Waxed. Dental floss that is coated with a thin layer of wax. Stronger and less likely to fray than Unwaxed, but might not fit as easily between very close teeth.
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene. Made from synthetic fiber (Gore-Tex) to help it glide between teeth better. Good for teeth that are closely spaced.
  • Dental Tape. Flatter and more broad than regular floss, works well on teeth that are not spaced too closely.
  • Super Floss. Thick with a yarn-like quality, great for those with bridgework, braces, or implants.
  • Floss Threader. Like a needle threader, this device helps floss push through tight spaces or dental work.
  • Floss Holder. A plastic device with a piece of floss held between two prongs. Easier to use than a length of floss for those who have trouble with dexterity.

Other popular tools that are not floss, but help in getting the job done when it comes to removing plaque and debris from the gums include:

  • Interproximal Brushes. Small brushes or swabs that are used by pushing them between the gaps of widely spaced teeth or dental work.
  • End-Tufted Brushes. A plastic handle with brush bristles on the end for getting to the hard-to-reach places of the teeth and gums.
  • Irrigation Devices. Often referred to as a water pick, or a water brush, these products use forced water to flush debris from between teeth and dental work as well as braces. Not efficient at removing plaque completely.

There you have it. The basis of flossing and the options available to you. Of course, a healthy mouth needs to have a professional cleaning and evaluation yearly to make sure that it stays healthy.
